Zofran is an efficient medicine that prevents nausea and vomiting that may trigger in cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery. Zofran (ondansetron) blocks the actions of chemicals in the body that can trigger nausea and vomiting. These 5-HT3 receptor antagonists that prevent chemotherapy or postoperative nausea and vomiting.

The antiemetic property of Zofran is brought about through the inhibition of 5-HT3 receptors present in brain as well as in GI tract. This inhibition of 5-HT3 receptors turns down the vomiting center in the brain which is also known as CTZ (chemoreceptor trigger zone)

How Zofran should be taken?

Available oral dose of Zofran should be taken orally with a glass of water, Do not swallow the tablet whole. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing. Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves.

The recommended adult oral dosage of ZOFRAN is 24 mg which should be given three times of equally divided  8-mg tablets administered 30 minutes before the start of single-day highly emetogenic chemotherapy with drug like Cisplatin.

For pediatric patients aged 12 years or above the dosage is the same as for adults, but in pediatric patients aged 4 to11 years, the dosage is one 4-mg Zofran or one 4-mg Zofran Tablet ODT

For Prevention of Nausea and Vomiting in Radiotherapy, take The recommended oral dosage is one 8-mg ZOFRAN Tablet or one 8-mg Zofran ODT.

If you missed your dose then take it as soon as possible and if it is very near time of your next schedule dose then, then skip the dose continue as usual.

Avoid the overdose of Zofran as it because it's overdosing symptoms in your body.

 

What are the storage conditions?

Zofran should be stored at room temperature away from light, heat and moisture. Keep out reach of children and pets.

Who should not take this medication?

Patient who is having liver disease or allergic to it or medicines similar to ondansetron like Dolasetron, Granisetron and Palonosetron, should not take Zofran.

Which drug should not be taken along with Zofran?

Some medicines, when taken along with Zofran may alter heart rhythm, hence should not be used with it. These drugs are Anagrelide, Methadone; Droperidol, certain antibiotics like - Azithromycin, Clarithromycin, Erythromycin, Levofloxacin, and cancer medicine such as arsenic trioxide and Vandetanib.

What are the safety measures of Zofran?

Before using this Zofran, tell your healthcare providers about your medical history, especially of: liver disease, irregular heartbeat and stomach/intestinal problems. The risk of QT prolongation may be increased if you are facing with certain medical conditions or taking drugs that may cause QT prolongation. Active ingredient present in Zofran may make you dizzy and drowsy; therefore avoid the work that makes you to put higher concentration into it such as driving car or handling machinery products. Do not give this medicine to the child younger than 4 years.
