Yasmin is a type of combined oral contraceptive pill containing Drospirenone (progesterone) and Ethinyl estradiol (estrogen). This effectively prevents pregnancy (safe and secure contraception means). Taking this birth control pill typically results in lighter, more regular and less painful menstrual bleeding; which signifies it can also be helpful for females who have troubles with predominantly heavy, irregular or painful menstrual periods.

How does Yasmin work?

Yasmin works by over-riding the usual menstrual cycle. In a female's usual menstrual cycle, the hormones levels alter throughout every month. These hormones bring about the release of eggs from the ovaries (process called ovulation) and prepare the uterine lining for a likely pregnancy. At the end of each menstrual cycle, if the egg has not been fertilized the hormone levels drop down, resulting in the shedding of the uterine lining as a monthly period. The daily dosage of hormones consumed in the pill work chiefly by tricking your body into thinking that ovulation has by now occurred. This helps in inhibiting the egg from ripening and being freed from the ovaries every month.

Who should not take Yasmin?

  • Females who are lactating.
  • Females who suffer from or have a history of bleeding disorders like blood clot in a vein (venous thromboembolism), in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) or in the legs (deep vein thrombosis).
  • Females who have a history of heart disorders like heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke caused by a blood clot in an artery.
  • Women with moderate to severe high blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Females with angina, an irregular heartbeat or heart valve disease.
  • Women above the age of 35 years who smoke more than 15 cigarettes per day.
  • Women with active liver disease, eg liver cancer, hepatitis.
  • Women with serious levels of high blood sugar, with complications affecting the kidneys, eyes or nerves.
  • Women with a history of liver disorder when liver function has not returned to normal.

What are the possible drug interactions of this drug?

  • Diuretics like aldosterone antagonists (Eplerenone) or potassium-sparing diuretics (Spironolactone).
  • Anti-epileptics: Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital
  • HIV medications: Ritonavir

How to take Yasmin?

Yasmin is a monophasic oral contraceptive tablet. One tablet is consumed daily for 21 days and then a 7 day break from pill-taking. During this 7 day break, the hormone levels in your blood fall down, which brings about a withdrawal bleed similar to your usual menstrual period. Then you can begin with subsequent pack after the 7 tablet-free days are up, even though you are still bleeding.

You must consume your pill at the same time each day; this aids you in remembering to take it.

Each tablet must be taken as a whole with a glass full of water.

What do in case you miss a tablet?

If you fail to remember to consume your pill at your normal time, consume it the moment you remember. A missed pill is one that is 24 hours or more lately. If you failed to take a pill, follow the instructions below.

  • One pill missed:

If you overlook to take ONE Dianette tablet, or begin your fresh packet one day late, you must take the tablet you missed the moment possible, even if this means consuming 2 tablets at the same time. Then carry on taking the rest of the packet as usual. You will still be protected against pregnancy and you don't require using additional contraception method.

  • Two or more pills missed:

If you forget to take 2 or more tablets, or begin your fresh packet one or more days late, you won't be protected against pregnancy. You must consume the last tablet you missed the instant possible, even if this means taking 2 tablets at the same time. Exclude the other missed ones. Then carry on taking your tablets, one daily, as usual. You should either not have intercourse, or use an additional barrier method of contraception, like condoms, for the subsequent 7 days.
