Progesterone is a natural hormone that our body makes. But when our body is unable to make sufficient of it, then Provera containing Medroxyprogesterone is given which is a progestin and a component of contraceptive.

It is used as a substitute of progesterone for many purposes like when women face difficulty during pregnancy and who are facing difficulty when they do not go through their menopause stage, for hormonal imbalance which leads to uterine bleeding and in amenorrhea.

How Provera acts?

Medroxyprogesterone in Provera is the active module which works by altering the mucus and uterine lining and convert proliferative phase into secretary phase during menstrual cycle which stops the growth of endometrium and starts secreting the hormones and proteins and starts preparing endometrium for embryo implantation which helps in pregnancy and once pregnancy occurs, provera helps in maintaining the pregnancy.

Provera is also used to reduce menopausal symptoms like hot flashes as hormone replacement therapy.

Who should not take Provera?

  • Patients allergic to Medroxyprogesterone or any of the ingredient of Provera
  • Patients who are pregnant
  • Patients with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • Patients who have medical history of blood clots
  • Patients with breast cancer or any estrogen or progesterone dependent cancer
  • Patients who have medical history of heart attack or stroke
  • Patients who smoke as it will increases the risk of side effects

How you should store Provera?

Best suitable condition for storage of Provera is at room temperature between 20 to 200C in its blister package.

What are the drug interactions of Provera?

Drugs like Carbamazepine, phenobarbital, griseofulvin, phenytoin, rifampin decreases its plasma concentration reduces its efficacy.

How you should take Provera?

  • Take Provera 10mg at same time every day not more than doses with 24 hours gap
  • Take Provera orally with or without food.
  • Parenteral dose for contraception is 150mg every 3 months should be taken intramuscularly or 104mg subcutaneously every 3 months

What should be done in case of Doses if-?

Missed Dose- Take your dose as soon as you remember but do not take 2 doses at same time and it's better to skip that dose.

Over Dose- Overdose leads to nausea, vomiting, dizziness, breast tenderness or vaginal bleeding, so seek medical help if you think you have taken more than recommended.

What would be the side effects of taking Provera?

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Hypersensitive reactions such as skin rashes, hives, swelling of mouth, face, lips or tongue
  • Mental or mood changes like depression, migraine, fainting
  • Vaginal discharge, odor, itching
  • Vision change, yellowing of eyes and skin

What precautions should be taken while getting Provera?

  • Asthmatic patients, diabetic patients, depression patients must be cautious
  • Pregnant ladies or who are planning to be must be cautious
  • Ladies who breast feed their baby should take great care
  • Provera may makes you dizzy or drowsy and these side effects will exaggerate with alcohol. So do not consume alcohol with Provera
  • Do not drive or do any alertness required activity because of dizziness caused due to Provera
  • Breast cancer patients or patients who have had their uterus removed
  • Kidney, liver, pancreatic patients and patients with vision problem should take care
