Prometrium is a female hormone (Progesterone) known to be useful for postmenopausal females who are consuming estrogen. This hormonal preparation prevents buildup of the lining of the uterus and unusual bleeding. This medicine may also be indicated for restoring menstruation if your menstrual periods have stopped suddenly. It can also be indicated for use in secondary amenorrhea.


Who should not take Prometrium?

  • Avoid taking Prometrium if you are suffering from or have a history of hypersensitive reaction to it.
  • If you have breast or a genital cancer, avoid this medication.
  • Avoid taking Prometrium if you are pregnant or have had a partial miscarriage.
  • As Prometrium contains peanut oil, don't take this drug if you are allergic to peanuts.
  • Don't take this medication if you have or ever had a blood clotting disease or a stroke.
  • Active pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis or history of these situations.
  • Prometrium is not safe for patients with unexplained vaginal bleeding, or serious liver ailment.


Which other drugs interact with Prometrium?

If Prometrium is consumed with certain other medicines, the effects of either could be enhanced, reduced, or modified. Prometrium must not be taken with antifungal drugs such as Ketoconazole or estrogen-containing drugs for example, birth control pills.


How to store Prometrium?

Prometrium must be stored at room temperature.


What is the usual dosage of Prometrium?

  • For females taking daily conjugated estrogen tablets, the normal adult dosage of this medication is 200mg preferably consumed at bedtime for 12 days consecutively per 28-day menstrual cycle.
  • To Restore Menstrual Periods: The normal adult Prometrium dosage is 400mg taken at bedtime for 10 days.

What should you do if you miss a dose of Prometrium?

You must consume Prometrium the moment you remember. If it is approximately the time for your subsequent dose, you should skip the one you missed and return to your regular timetable. Do not take two doses at once.


What are the possible side effects of Prometrium?

Side effects of this medication may include back pain, bloating, abdominal cramping, irritability, joint pain, breast tenderness or pain, coughing, depression, chest pain, nausea, constipation, fatigue, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, hot flashes, muscle pain. If you experience any of these side effects, you must immediately contact your nearest doctor.


What is the most significant information you must know about Prometrium?

  • Prometrium must not be used in case the patient is suffering from heart disease, stroke, or dementia.
  • This medication may make you drowsy or dizzy. Do not carry out any heavy physical task while taking Prometrium until you know how Prometrium affects you.
  • Prometrium should not be used by female suffering from undiagnosed irregular genital bleeding.

Caution must be exercised while giving this drug to children under 18 years of age and elderly population aged 65 and over.
