Paxil having Paroxetine as main ingredient works as anti depressant, which belongs to group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and used to treat depression, anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and menopausal hot flashes and night sweats.

How Paxil acts?

Paroxetine because belongs to SSRI, so it inhibits the neuronal reuptake of serotonin and potentiates serotonergic activity in brain which helps to maintain cheerful mental stability.

It has very weak effect on neuronal reuptake of dopamine and nor epinephrine. Paxil is effective in the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, pain disorder, anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and menopausal hot flashes.

Paroxetine distributes all through the body as well as CNS with only 1% remaining in plasma.

Who should not take Paxil?

  • Patients who are allergic to Paroxetine or any inactive ingredient of Paxil
  • Ladies who are pregnant or planning to be
  • Ladies who breast feed their baby
  • Contraindicated in patients who are taking Pimozide or Thioridazine


How you should store Paxil?

Store it away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture and keep it at room temperature.

What are the drug interactions of Paxil?

  • Blood thinners
  • Anti HIV medicines
  • Tryptophans
  • Sleeping pills, muscle relaxants
  • Narcotic pain medicines
  • Anti seizure medicines
  • Anti psychotic or other anti depressant medicines
  • Medicines used to treat migraine headache


How you should take Paxil?

  • Do not break or chew the tablet. Take it as whole as it comes in film coated form.
  • Initial recommended dose of Paxil is 20mg per day as a single dose in morning with or without food.
  • When patient is not responding to 20mg dose then it can be increased maximum up to 50mg per day with 10mg per day increment.
  • Dose should be increased at an interval of 1 week


What should be done in case of Doses if-?

Missed Dose- Take missed dose as soon as you remember, but do not double it if it is the time for your next dose.

Over Dose- Overdose may be serious, so seek out medical emergency in case of overdose.

What would be the side effects of taking Paxil?

  • Severe skin rashes, fever, sore throat, swelling of face, lips and throat
  • Severe nervous system reactions such as sweating, confusion, irregular heartbeats, tremors, fainting
  • Ophthalmic disorder such as vision alteration, pain in eyes and swelling
  • Change in weight and appetite
  • Low level of sodium in body which leads to loss of coordination, headache, severe weakness
  • Unusual bleeding from nose, mouth, vagina or rectum
  • High serotonin level in body which leads to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling unstaedy


What precautions should be taken while getting Paxil?

  • Alcohol with Paxil increases its side effects
  • Paxil makes you dizzy, drowsy and cause your vision blurred, so try to avoid driving or any activity which requires concentration
  • Patients on anti depressant therapy should be closely monitored for any abnormal change in behavior
