Domperidone as the main constituent of Motilium helps in relieving nausea and vomiting and can be useful in treating that may occur due to many causes such as by taking medicines for Parkinson's disease, anti cancer chemotherapy, general anesthetics, and in migraine.

Motilium does not cross blood brain barrier but enhances the release of prolactin from pituitary, lowers the esophageal pressure and accelerate gastric emptying and prevents vomiting.

How Motilium acts?

Active ingredient in Motilium is Domperidone, which is a dopamine antagonist having anti emetic properties. Anti emetic effects of Motilium is due to a combination of gastrokinetic or peripheral effects and antagonism of dopamine receptors in chemorecptor trigger zone which lies outside the blood brain barrier.

Blockage of dopamine receptors causes the tightening of muscles at the entry to stomach and relaxing at the exit of stomach and thus increases the contraction of muscles in the stomach itself.

It will speed up the gastric emptying and prevents reflux that is regurgitation of stomach contents back into food pipe and helps in preventing vomiting and reduces bloating and feeling of fullness and sickness
