Ibandronate is indicated to treat or prevent osteoporosis in females after menopause. This medicine falls under the category of medicines known as bisphosphonates. It slows bone loss while enhancing bone mass, which may stop bone fractures. This drug modifies the succession of bone formation and breakdown in the body.

 When is Ibandronate not used?

AVOID the use of Ibandronate if:

  • You have serious kidney troubles or low calcium or Vitamin D levels in your blood.
  • You are pregnant or are lactating.
  • Stomach or intestinal problems like ulcers.
  • You are hypersensitive to any component in Ibandronate.

Which other drugs interact with Ibandronate?

Some medications may interact with this drug. Inform your doctor if you are consuming any other medications, particularly any of the following:

  • Corticosteroids such as Prednisone.
  • Calcium or iron supplements.
  • Angiogenesis inhibitors such as Bevacizumab as the possibility of jawbone troubles may be enhanced.

 

How should Ibandronate be stored?

Ibandronate tablets should be stored at room temperature below 25oC away from heat, moisture and light. Keep the drug away from the reach of children and pets.

 

How is Ibandronate taken?

Take this drug orally, typically one time in a month on the same date every month. You can select the day of the month that best shapes your timetable. Take this tablet after getting up for the day, ahead of consuming food. The tablet should be taken as a whole. Wait for a minimum of one hour after taking Ibandronate before you eat or drink anything and before consuming any other drug by mouth.

What to do in case of missed dose?

If you forgot to take a dose and your subsequent planned dose is more than 7 days away, avoid consuming the drug later in the day. You can consume it the next morning after you memorize. Then you can carry on consuming your monthly dose in the morning on your initially selected day of the month. If subsequent planned dose is only 1 to 7 days away, you can wait until your chosen day to take the medicine. Never ever take two tablets within the same week to make up for the missed one.

 

What to do in case of overdose?

If an overdose is suspected, you can consult emergency room or local poison control center right away.

 

What are the side effects of Ibandronate?

Stomach upset, pain in legs or arms, diarrhea, or mild flu-like signs (muscle ache or fatigue) may come about on consumption of this medication. If any of these side effects continue or get worse, tell your physician promptly.

 

What are the safety measures to be followed while taking this drug?

  • Do not take products containing calcium or iron (milk, yoghurt or antacids containing calcium, aluminum or magnesium) at least one hour after taking Ibandronate.
  • If you are allergic to other bisphosphonates (such as Alendronate, Pamidronate, Etidronate, Risedronate), avoid the intake of Ibandronate in that case.
  • Proper dental care is significant while you are consuming this drug. Thus brush your teeth properly and visit your dentist regularly. Also dental procedures must be avoided while you are using Ibandronate.
