Aventyl is a second generation Tricyclic anti depressant, which increases the activity of certain chemicals in brain and helps in elevating your mood. It is also used to treat nocturnal enuresis that is childhood bedwetting.

How Aventyl acts?

Neurotransmitters are the chemical that nerves make and use to communicate with other nerves. In depression there is an imbalance in neurotransmitters. So tricyclic antidepressants such as Nortriptyline in Aventyl increases the level of two neurotransmitters namely, serotonin and norepinephrine. And by restoring the balance of these neurotransmitters in brain treats depression that is mood is elevated.

Who should not take Aventyl?

  • Patients allergic to Aventyl or any of its ingredients should not take it
  • Patients having medical history of stroke, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, seizures should not take it
  • Patients of hyperthyroidism should also not take it
  • Patients who are in recovery phase after heart attack
  • Patients who are pregnant ladies or planning to conceive
  • Patients who are nursing mothers


What are the drug interactions of Aventyl?

  • Azole antifungal like Fluconazole, Phenothiazines like Chlorpromazine, SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like Fluoxetine and  Quinidine will increases the side effects of Aventyl
  • Arsenic, astemizole, droperidol, linezolid, MAO inhibitors like Phenelzine, Quinolone antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin and Tramadol will increase the risk of high blood pressure and irregular heart beat or seizures
  • Barbiturates like Phenytoin, phenobarbital will decreases the effectiveness of Aventyl
  • Anticholinergics like Benztropine , sympathomimetics like phenylephrine, carbamazepine and chlorpropamide will also increase Aventyl's side effects
  • Aventyl decreases the effectiveness of Clonidine, guanethidine or guanfacine


How you should store Aventyl?

  • Store the medicine at room temperature and in a tightly closed container
  • Keep it away from heat, moisture, sunlight and to the reach of children.


How you should take Aventyl?

  • Adults should take Aventyl 25mg orally with or without food 3 to 4 times daily and total dose can be given at night during bedtime.
  • Maximum effective dose for adults is 150mg daily.
  • For children or patients below 28 years of age, maximum effective dose is 30-50mg once daily or in divided dose.


What should be done in case of doses if?-

Missed Dose- If you missed your dose then take it as soon as you remember, but do not double it if it is your next dosing schedule and do not cover the missed dose of night time to take next morning

Over Dose- Overdose leads to adverse cardiac effects as Aventyl have narrow therapeutic index which is considered to be medical emergency

What would be the side effects of taking Aventyl?

  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation, abdominal pain
  • Burning, itching, numbness
  • Dizziness, lower back pain, painful or difficult urination
  • Sedation, depression
  • Increased appetite
  • Mild blurred vision
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hypotension


What precautions should be take care while getting Aventyl?

  • Avoid alcohol consumption as it may exaggerate its side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision
  • Avoid driving or any attention required activity
  • Hot weather, fever and exercise may cause drowsiness or fainting if you are consuming Aventyl especially during morning, so sit or lie down if you feel so
  • You will become more sensitive to sunburn on Aventyl treatment so avoid sun exposure, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing.
